Reggio-Inspired, Project-Based Learning
In Reggio Emilia pedagogy, children learn best when their ideas are taken seriously. Instead of separate subjects and worksheets, learning unfolds through long-form projects sparked by children’s questions and the world around them.
Projects may explore questions like:
-
How does water move through land?
-
What makes a structure strong?
-
How do communities make decisions?
-
What does it mean to lead and collaborate?
From there, children might design and build, map ecosystems, write proposals, create models, conduct experiments, document observations, and reflect together—integrating science, literacy, art, math, and systems thinking naturally.

Hawk’s Nest Homeschool’s program for children ages 7–11 is designed for families seeking a slower, deeper, more human approach to learning. Rooted in Reggio Emilia philosophy,
nature-based education, and social-emotional learning (SEL), this program supports
children as capable thinkers, collaborators, and creators
.
Our classroom is entirely outdoors on a five-acre farm in Jupiter Farms. The land itself becomes a co-teacher, inviting curiosity, movement, stewardship, and real-world inquiry.
What Makes Older Hawks Different
Children are trusted to ask meaningful questions, explore real problems, and build projects that matter.
This is not traditional school moved outside. It’s a living learning ecosystem built around:
Curiosity over compliance
Depth over speed
Process over product
Relationship as the foundation for learning
Nature as the third teacher
A Typical Day (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
Children leave having contributed to something meaningful...learning that feels alive, integrated, and real
Each day follows a predictable rhythm that offers both structure and freedom:
Arrival + community check-in
Long-form project work and inquiry
Nature exploration / skill-building
Creative expression and atelier work
Snack + connection time
Group reflection + documentation
Who Thrives in Older Hawks
Older Hawks is especially supportive for children who flourish with
movement, hands-on learning, and meaningful work.
This program is a great fit for families who value:
Outdoor immersion and nature-based learning
Emotional intelligence and community care
Creativity, inquiry, and project work
A slower pace with deeper learning
A respectful, relationship-centered environment

Entirely Outdoor Classroom on a Five-Acre Farm
Children learn under trees, at outdoor work tables, in gardens, across fields, and alongside the rhythms of the natural world.
Outdoor learning supports:
-
Nervous system regulation and emotional steadiness
-
Strength, coordination, and embodied confidence
-
Sensory integration and attention
-
Risk assessment and problem-solving
-
Creativity and resilience
Weather and seasons become part of the curriculum. Children develop a real relationship with the land—and with themselves.

Social-Emotional Learning Embedded Daily
At Hawk’s Nest, SEL isn’t a separate class—it’s woven into everything.
Children practice:
-
Naming and navigating emotions
-
Conflict resolution with support
-
Empathy, perspective-taking, and accountability
-
Listening and respectful communication
-
Community reflection circles and collaborative agreements
-
We guide through co-regulation first, helping children build the inner tools to lead, collaborate, and express themselves with confidence.
Art as a Language (Atelier-Inspired)
In true Reggio tradition, art is not an “extra.” It’s one of the child’s primary ways of thinking and communicating.
Children explore ideas through:
-
Natural materials and found objects
-
Drawing, watercolor, and mixed media
-
Building, sculpting, and design work
-
Journaling, sketching, and visual documentation
Our atelier approach supports children in translating their ideas into form—strengthening focus, creativity, and self-expression.
